June 1, 2010 Letter from Christine Doidge
Greetings, or rather sanibonani (sah-nee-boh-NAH-nee), which is Zulu for Hello!
I have recently been appointed by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to serve as a volunteer in the ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission Program, beginning in late August. This twelve month program currently operates in six countries around the globe, and its mission is to provide ELCA young adults with a year-long international mission experience that will contribute to their development as servant-leaders for the church. This means leading a simple life in a host community, learning from them and becoming globally formed and globally informed through my experiences. I will be living in the small town of Carolina in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa and will be serving with the Igwa Circuit of the Eastern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Southern Africa (ELCSA), which incorporates numerous congregations in both urban and rural settings. Service opportunities may include: visitation of neighboring parishes, worship leadership, church administration, young adult’s league, etc. In addition, there are opportunities for service in the greater Carolina community, such as: agriculture development, HIV/AIDS outreach, soup kitchens, and many other things. I invite you to ask questions and share your stories with me as I prepare for this exciting adventure! ELCA Global Mission contributes up to $6,000 for each young adult’s year of mission service. However, I am responsible for raising a minimum of $4,000 toward my support package. This package provides transportation costs, housing, board or food allowance, a small stipend, health insurance, U.S. and in-country orientation, and a re-entry conference. You can support me in a number of ways, including encouragement, prayer, and financial assistance. Please consider this an opportunity to: SUPPORT A MISSIONARY FOR A DAY  Please send your contribution to St James Lutheran Church, 1315 SW Park Ave, Portland, OR 97201. Please make out checks to St. James and write YAGM- Christine Doidge on the memo line.  Thank you for your support; we shall see what God has in mind for me through global service and beyond! I will be in touch with you throughout my year of service via my blog and email, and am overjoyed that you will be able to “go along” with me in this global mission.
Together in Christ,
Christine Doidge

The Metro D.C. Synod is in the midst the “Year of the Young Adult,” a synod-wide focus for 2010.
“Perceptions: Young Adults and the Church” is a video which serves as a discussion starter for groups interested in exploring what young adults, from outside and inside the church, may be thinking about church, Christianity and Christ. It was produced under the leadership of the Rev. Amy Thompson Sevimli, Assistant to the Bishop, with support from the National Lutheran Home in Rockville, Md., to help congregations connect with the young adults living, working and worshipping in their communities. Find the video on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVUdsy9kBCQ) and the synod’s Web site (http://www.metrodcelca.org/faith-resources/look-in/)

Letter from Lutheran Campus Ministry, Corvallis
Dear Pastors and Congregational Leaders,
The season of graduations is upon us. That means some of your high school students are making plans for college, community college, or technical schools. Help them make a smooth transition by pointing them to the Lutheran Campus Ministry where they’ll be attending school.  Please read the front page article in the May-June edition of “Seeds for the Parish” about Lutheran Campus Ministry. Find a list of ministries and campus ministers for referring college-bound students at http://www.elca.org/campusministry and select “find a ministry or person.”  Of course, if students from your congregation are coming to Oregon State University or Linn Benton Community College, I’d love to connect with them, help them continue their spiritual journey, give them the support they’ll need as they transition into college life, and introduce them to awesome young adults who are part of our ministry.  I promise to contact them if you send me their name and a reliable phone and email address (the university provides no contact information unless the student has allowed them to do so). I can be contacted by email at info@luther-house.org or by phone at 541-753-5213.  You can also introduce them to our ministry by pointing them to our student website at http://people.oregonstate.edu/studentgroups/lutheranstudents/  You’re welcome to bookmark this for your own use. And I invite you to join the “Friends of Luther House” Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wall&ref=share&gid=208964370277.
Thanks for your help in keeping your college students connected!
